So, 2009 is over and a new decade is finally upon us, but what will 2010 mean for corporate video production and online video marketing? Well… 2009 was undoubtedly a landmark year and all the signs suggest that it looks set to explode! Here’s why.
Long gone are the days when watching video online was a frustrating, time-consuming and heavily-pixellated experience. Thanks to the ubiquity of the Internet and ever-increasing bandwidths, we are all watching more online video than ever before. YouTube has become the 2nd biggest search engine after Google, Google now incorporates video directly into its search results and websites that don’t contain video are beginning to look positively archaic. As a result, businesses (large and small), charities and public sector organisations in 2009, began to really embrace corporate video production.
In the cluttered, information-overload world of the Internet, they realised that not only does a well-produced short film or video advert have a much better chance of being watched, than long pages of static text ever do of being read, but also that people tend to believe what they can see and hear, far more than what they read. They also understood that video can have an emotional impact with a viewer way beyond that of the written word.
In 2009, even the smallest local businesses started to commission video production companies to produce short promotional films and online adverts. And with more and more online business directories incorporating videos into their listings, corporate video production becoming more accessible, social networking becoming more popular and search engines becoming more sophisticated, there is simply no reason to think that this trend won’t continue apace.
According to the latest research by the American firm Ad-ology, despite the global economic downturn 28% of small business owners in the United States are planning to use more online video advertising to market their companies in 2010 – as well as increase their use of popular social media networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. A percentage this high clearly suggests that online video marketing is here to stay and that the reluctance of smaller companies to embrace video marketing technologies is futile. It’s also reflects a renewed sense of optimism amoung small business owners about the general direction of the global economy, combined with the increased affordability and reach of corporate video productions.
However, smart businesses in 2010 won’t just be using video online. The effectiveness, versatility and most importantly the increased accessibility of corporate video production means that more and more businesses will start or continue to use video for an increasingly wide range of applications, from training staff and sales presentations, to recruitment, internal communications, video conferencing, the promotion of CSR credentials and green initiatives, glossy commercials, large company presentations, blogs and customer testimonials. The possibilities are almost endless!
It was not so long ago when corporate video production was frowned upon by many and its efficacy doubted. It has now become one of the most reliable and cost-effective forms of marketing around, and thanks to the continued development and expansion of the Internet, it is quickly becoming a commercial necessity. Organisations and companies (large and small) who are not using it for marketing purposes, will very soon find themselves behind the competition and playing catch up. The future of corporate video production and online video advertising looks very bright indeed!

Video production can be difficult to understand and coordinate sometimes. There are certain factors that you need to consider when outsourcing your production. Learning a little about each of these factors will better prepare you to communicate with video production companies as well as help you to manage your expectations of the production.
End Use
The most important part of planning video productions is identifying your real end use. Whether planning a corporate video production or commercial production, a lot of ventures are highly optimistic in this regard. Most video productions do not see broadcast. Having said that, if you actually have a budget and a campaign strategy or a true anticipated use for your production in the broadcast realm, by all means proceed as though your final product requires broadcast quality.
If there is a great likelihood however that your production is to be for demo use or internet use only, be honest with your producer. This will allow for better planning and a great deal of savings with your video production service.
Quality/Resolution
End use directly influences the quality and resolution parameters of your production. There are many resolutions available. You may also capture your production on film or in digital format. Again, being honest with yourself and your producer is very important here.
Some producers, directors more so, will automatically recommend film. Film, especially 35mm, is one of the most expensive options available. While film is very lovely to look at, for most practical applications, it is indistinguishable from digital video production. Most family homes are converting to high definition televisions, but standard definition productions are still viable for the immediate future, especially for local commercial projects.
Also there is a certain faux HD format known as HDV. This resolution is definitely adequate for many local productions and, with professional post work, national campaigns.
Turnaround
You must also be realistic with your turnaround expectations. Format factors into this as well. For example, editing a video for web shot on HDV tape will be much faster than editing a commercial for national broadcast shot in HD.
Also the extensiveness of the production must not be underestimated. If the concept is lofty and requires a great amount of preproduction, coordination and building, your production will suffer a much longer timetable. The more prepared you are, the quicker your production will run. The more specific you are with your requirements, the more accurate your production time quote will be.
Rates
Though there is somewhat of an industry standard, rates will vary across the board. Lower bids can mean lower quality and higher bids can mean high gross gouging, but there are many exceptions. The best approach to take is to review your potential production company’s previous work.
If you like the quality and are happy with their approximation of a timetable for your production, then it is fair to evaluate the cost of their services against the recoupment of your investment. Most worthwhile, independent firms have their own intelligent ways of reducing cost in their productions and are happy to pass the savings onto you to build their reputation and client base.
Innovation
A video production studio needs to be innovative, not only creatively, but fiscally. Although it may be impressive to some to wave your hands in an advertising client’s face and narrate an epic tale of marketing genius as you conjure up invisible images of their brand spreading throughout the global atmosphere, but finding ways to save money while saving concept and quality, that takes true skill.
Though it may be a hassle to reassess the initial urge to follow the flashiest path of least resistance, sometimes a comparable end result can be obtained through alternative, less costly means with a little extra effort and ingenuity. An easy example of this is the use of computer graphics imaging to replicate thousands and thousands of unpaid virtual extras and potentially budget-busting sets and landscapes. But there are many, many ways to operate smarter on any production, ultimately bringing more value to the client.
Video production and video production editing are intricate processes that obviously involve more than knowing your end use, quality requirements, timetables and budget constraints. Having a deeper understanding of your project goals will benefit you tremendously. Taking the extra time in the beginning will save you grief in the end. And then after considering all of the factors involved, you will be able to select the perfect video production company for your project.

Video production nowadays takes place in a specialised way and consumers are just required to fill in their requirements in a form along with the time of completion required. The length of the video which can be anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours is also an important factor about which a client needs to inform the video production company. Many types of videos are produced now like infomercials, TV broadcasts, to Electronic press kits and videos to be shown as legal evidences. The cost of a video can vary from 2000 to more than 1,50,000 dollars. A business can get all the other services for its videos like script writing, voice overs and actors. If it has any other requirements like use of a high definition camera, it can also mention them to the company.
Bill Gates once said that a video has a million hits as compared to a picture and so it can create the maximum impression on a person who does not know anything about your company. Importance of online videos is even more in a place like America where so much purchases are made online. Videography is the best way to persuade customers and it is far more powerful than print advertising. In Florida, businesses need to hire a video production company because it can give them can excellent video quality. It is very simple to produce videos with a camcorder and an editing software, but the quality of such videos is markedly different from the commercials aired on TV. The difference between the homemade videos and the ones produced commercially is the cinematography, the latter ones being produced with high quality cameras. Two kinds of videos are getting quite popular now, the ones shot for web and another shot for TV. Lets discuss, how both these videos are prepared.
Online videos do not make use of the most expensive shooting cameras. A simple digital video recorder can be used for preparing high quality videos for online airing. As far as lighting of the room for shooting such videos is concerned, a well-lit room without any special lighting arrangements is sufficient. For sound equipments, a standard microphone is only required.
For making videos for television, thousands of dollars are required to make the right impact with the video. High quality lighting equipments and cameras are used by specialized professionals for video preparation. Several cameramen may be required for shooting such special videos which need several cameras to be used for a single take. Professional actors are needed to act in such videos in a set created with expensive sets and props. Apart from the money required, a television video also requires several days for its preparation. Sometimes, this cost is so high that a 30 second commercial may cost somewhat close to $300, 000.
Most of the times, a video production company can take your business leaps forward with its well produced videos. In Florida, companies producing the best quality videos are charging handsome amounts for them. In fact, they have got the highest demand for their videos. In the video production business, nothing is cheap and a business can only expect the quality that it has paid for. A video production company offers you infomercials which are their main product. Infomercial DVD’s also exist for imparting training to employees by some companies. Advanced audiovisual presentations are also used by companies for imparting lectures or by non-profit organisations to inform people about their services.

Video is currently the fastest growing advertising medium especially online and is no longer the exclusive domain of Fortune 500 companies. Increasingly, companies of all sizes are realizing that video is a highly effective marketing tool when done right and are looking for a way their company can benefit from this trend. What holds many companies back is the fear of spending their marketing budget to hire a video production company and not getting the expected creative result and Return on Investment.
Why is this so often the case? One of the reasons is that many companies follow the same procedure for hiring a creative company that they do when purchasing a tangible product. They get 3 different quotes from local video production companies and choose the most appealing offer which is normally the cheapest one. The problem with this approach is that it is often extremely difficult to truly compare apples-to-apples in the creative services industry.
Here are 5 guidelines to making an informed decision when hiring a video production company.
1) Do they have specific experience in the type of video (corporate video, sales video, training video, etc.) in their portfolio that you are wanting them to produce? While this may sound basic it is easy to get caught up with a demo reel filled with special effects and forget that at the end of the day your video must accomplish its intended purpose.
2) Did they take the time to ask you questions about your target audience and your business goals before discussing the specifics of your project? You want to hire a video production company that is marketing oriented and understands how to sell your product or communicate your message.
3) Do they care about the success of your project? Look for a production company that has integrity and builds long-term partnerships with their clients. These companies enjoy ongoing relationships with their clients. Ask for references and call them.
4) Did they provide a professional proposal that clearly explains in sufficient detail what you are paying for? Are they shooting in HD or SD? Is it a 2 camera shoot or 3 camera shoot? How many days of shooting are involved? Are they including a full buyout for all the actors and voiceover talent involved to avoiding additional costs later on? These are all questions you should ask so you can understand how each company arrived at the quoted price. This ensures that the video production company isn’t cutting corners so they can come in at the lowest price when its not in your best interest.
5) Did you receive prompt and professional customer service? When you called the video production company what were your first impressions? Did they listen to your needs and offer helpful recommendations? If they are difficult to communicate with during the beginning stages imagine how hard it will be when you are under pressure to meet a deadline.
Following these guidelines when evaluating video production companies will improve your chances of success and ultimately enable you to identify the company best suited for your needs.

Computer Video Production is nothing but using the computer as the heart of your video production system. With computers becoming more and more affordable and at the same time powerful, it is no wonder that it plays such an important role in the video production process.
And though computers play an important role in the process, you also need to look at the other aspects – things like video equipment selection, capturing video, video editing, and sharing video in general.
Everybody loves watching videos, especially when it involves people closer to you, or things that are dear to your heart. Though you may think that the digital camcorder is the only equipment you would need to meet all your video related needs, and to some extent it may also be true, there are other important steps that need to be done for you to be able to get an enjoyable video, which you can share with others.
Let us briefly touch upon the steps in the Video Creation process.
Selecting/Buying video equipments – You will need digital cameras/camcorders to setup your video production system.
Capturing your video on computer – Will need a capturing device depending on whether you need to capture digital or analog video
The right computer configuration – You will need a fast / powerful computer for video production.
Select video editing software – Most of the stuff is done here nowadays. Used to edit and polish your video
Sharing your video – To write your final video on DVD / VCD or other media
This is what you need to setup your video production system at home. Looks simple on the face of it, and it is if you just intend to create your own videos, which you would share with your friends and close one. Even the cost of this setup is going to be far more affordable, with prices of electronic instruments constantly falling.
The learning curve is fairly simple. You just do it a few times and you will get a hang of it. But if you intend to turn this into a profession, the learning curve is different and involves an in-depth study of a few more areas – both technical as well as around the process.

As times have changed technology has made creating a quality video much more attainable for the beginner videographer aspiring to create his/her great film. We will cover a broad overview and establish a great starting point to your career or hobby. All video productions home or professional should follow the same three-part process. Pre-production, production and post-production is the process that must be followed to successfully create your video. We will simplify each phase, but please keep in mind every part of video production can require a level of understanding that can become overwhelming for an individual. We will provide basic understanding that will enable anyone to produce a good film, for a modest or free budget. Lets get started, so that you may begin your professional or home video. Time to create.
Pre-production
Preproduction is the planning stage of your project similar to a game or business plan. Here is where you set your goals and cover how you will accomplish them. This is the most important phase and will determine the success of your project. If done diligently it will allow a production to run smoothly, achieve its goals and reach its potential. First lets determine your goals and what you hope to achieve with your video. Naturally we must ask and answer some questions at this point. What kind of project will it be? (Informative, Horror) What is the purpose of this video? (Marketing, entertainment) Who is your audience? (Clients, general public) What is your audience knowledge level? (Adults, children) What format is needed for your video? (Interview, story based) What style is needed? (Formal, informal) Make sure to match your style and format appropriately. Define available resources, outline your budget if one exist, schedule talent and locations. Depending on your budget a professional camera would be the first option, but several retail camcorders can produce a decent quality picture for your video output. If purchasing a camera is not in your budget try borrowing, but do remember the responsibility that comes with using some else’s valuable equipment. Answer all of these questions plus any others that you feel may apply to your project and create a good plan. Let your creativity loose at this point then begin your research and gather all relevant information. Think about elements that will improve your production (e.g. a fan clapping and screaming, for reaction if filming a live performance).
Tip: If you need to write a script, keep your sentences short and simple.
Production
Production is the recording, and everything associated with capturing the video/audio feeds (input). As you can imagine this is the meat of your production. Your audience viewing experience will be determined here; this will require patience and practice in order to master. Enjoy experimenting at this point, but if your shots require other people time and talent please be considerate and avoid loosing valuable resources. First get acquainted with your camera, remember the manual is your friend and will most likely be user friendly. Now lets avoid some beginner mistakes and shorten your learning curve with some:
Filming tips
1. Avoid zooming in and out too much if, or when you do it make sure it is done slowly.
2. Keep shots steady use a tripod if possible or at least brace against something. (E.g. your knee)
3. Where are you? Keep your background in mind a landmark will tell your viewers where you are and can bring depth to your shot.
4. Keep your video clips short an audience can get bored quickly.
5. Lighting is the most important factor of creating a quality shot while numerous techniques exist, for multiple scenarios. Three point lighting will be versatile enough to fit most scenarios. If a lighting kit is not in your budget then keep a light source behind you and make use of natural light. (Properly lighting a scene can become very complicated and require its individual article, coming soon)
6. Always film from multiple angles; be sure to experiment with this it will improve your production.
7. Learn from the professionals look at your favorite movies & videos from the Director of Photography point of view.
8. Always check your audio keep your subject within three feet of your microphone.
Tip: Lighting is measured by temperature, if recording outside film early morning or late afternoon.
Post-production
Post-production mainly consist of compiling all your raw recorded footage and manipulating it with some non-linear editing software. You will need a computer with editing software, a storage device and a video capture device (you can use your camera with the right accessory). With the advances in technology this is another tool that can be attained at a reasonable rate or absolutely free. Final Cut in my opinion is the most powerful retail software, but again if you have a PC, Windows Moviemaker should already be installed and iMovie for Macs either software will suffice. Decide on a main or master clip for each shot and use “cutaways”(E.g. different angles of the same shot) to enhance your video. When editing, make sure your audio is synced with your main video and consider your audience attention span. Experiment with effects, but find a favorite or two and don’t over use. Your audience will grow tired of effects very quickly and most don’t survive the test of time. Attention to detail will avoid many editing mistakes remember to keep your clips organized and create a system. Once again keep your software manual close.
Tip: Use a static shot as your main clip and keep it interesting by including other clips. The average person attention span is approximately 30 minutes.
Experiment, practice, study, invest time and your videos will soon emulate those professional videos you now marvel at. Video production is constantly improving always continue to learn and evolve.

No video production is perfect, but to help make yours the best it can be, here is a rundown of the most common mistakes novice video producers make.
1. VIDEO IS TOO BORING.
Ouch! Yes, that sounds a bit harsh but it is so very true. We all like to think that our video is so riveting that viewers will be enthralled with our masterpiece. Unfortunately, this is often just wishful thinking. Generally speaking, to hold a viewer’s attention, your video needs to be fast paced and told with some emotion. Dry facts do not do well on video so spice it up with some emotionally laden production techniques and a storyline. Adding music is the single easiest way to keep a video entertaining.
Make sure your opening is entertaining. DO NOT start off with credits. I am sorry to be the one to tell you, but few people give a darn about the credits, except for the video makers themselves. (And their mommies.) Start off with a bang and then pull back and give some of the more boring information. So many videos start off with credits that it drives me nuts. That is a blatant mistake that is very easy to avoid. Yes, Hollywood movies USED to start with credits, but notice how that does not happen anymore. Most movies now start off with an explosion. When they started out with credits most of the audience used that time to get popcorn.
2. VIDEO IS TOO LONG
This goes hand-in-hand with too boring. A long video tends to get really boring, even if it is generally of high quality. While there is no set length for video, SHORTER IS ALWAYS BETTER. Done correctly, a two minute video contains tons of information. BE CONCISE. No need to drag it out to ten minutes. Ten minutes is an eternity on video. The fact that in real life ten minutes flashes by like a nano-second is irrelevant. On video, ten minutes seems like forever.
3. VIDEO IS MADE FOR THE VIDEO MAKER, NOT THE AUDIENCE.
Ouch again! I’m feeling a bit mean here but again, this is true. I have seen it a million times. And yes, when I started in video production 30 long years ago, I was a major offender. As a video producer, you have to keep in mind who your audience is and what they want to see. You are not making this video for your own gratification. You are making it to impart information to strangers. What is their viewpoint? What do they already know and how do they feel about it?
You need to look at your finished video and put yourself in the typical viewer’s frame of mind. Look at your video as though you were seeing it for the first time. This is hard to do since you are looking at it for the ten millionth time but it is really important.
4. GOING OFF ON TANGENTS
Wow, is this ever easy to do. I do it myself. But straying from the main point of your video is one way to make a really long and boring video. Be laser focused. To help you do this, sum up the point of your video in one sentence. If you can not sum it up in one simple sentence then you need to re-think your premise.
5. EXPECTING TOO MUCH.
OK, I am guilty of this one too. I really thought my comedy election spoof was gonna make the Tonight Show. It didn’t. Sob, sob. But it does have a 5-star rating on You Tube! We all hear about the internet video sensations that get millions of views. It happens, but truth is, it is relatively rare. The more common scenario is for your precious video to get lost in the 60,000 daily uploads to You Tube. Getting viewers means you have to cultivate friends and subscriptions. Sprinkle the link back to your video all over the web on social bookmarking sites. Then, if your video has hit the right nerve, the viral effect will take over and your viewership will snowball.
There you have it, the top 5 mistakes in video production as seen by yours truly. I hope this article does not discourage you but rather encourages you to avoid some of the common mistakes so your video can be as effective as possible.
